A trend in performance management is towards a process that is more dynamic, actionable and informal. The goal is regular and timely feedback (instead of a formal annual or other timed separate feedback session) that provides concrete data on how to improve.

With all organizational feedback systems there is a delicate balance between providing useful feedback to individuals and driving personnel decisions such as compensation, retention and promotion.
